You might know what that phrase means “Faith like a mustard seed.” Its from the Bible and basically a mustard seed is super small. And if you’re like me, its tempting to dismiss or devalue phrases like these because you think you know what it means. But its crucial. How does it play out in your life? Faith is such a broad word . . . we hear it and see it all over the place, even Target or Kohl’s has “inspirational” wall decor. I think today people have a desire for the spiritual to be part of their lives and hanging the word faith on their door makes them feel spiritual.
Faith in what? What does it really mean? Jesus was all about teaching people what faith means. Jesus confused his disciples often but think about this example: Jesus got kinda wild one day saying that people had to eat his flesh and drink his blood to have eternal life. “The one who feeds on me will live because of me.” His 12 disciples were there listening, and so were some other Jews because he was in a synagogue. When the 12 disciples heard it, they had a really hard time with what he was saying. Most of the Jews who had been interested in Jesus apparently drew the line there and said forget it Jesus is crazy and blasphemous. Jesus looked at the 12 and asked them if they were gonna leave too. Simon Peter said “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”
Here’s the thing: Peter and the other guys were really confused by what Jesus was saying. But they knew enough of Him to stay. Peter didn’t understand it all but he had enough faith to trust. You can always tell how much faith you have by your thoughts and actions. A great Bible teacher says faith is the link between our theology and our reality. We say believe in Jesus. Will you stay with Jesus when you don’t get it? Often we don’t “leave Jesus” or stop going to church but we entertain doubts and cynicism in our hearts. Your heart is what matters! Our hearts have to trust him enough to not doubt or fear. We don’t have to have it all figured out! When we’re confused we just have to have enough faith in Him to trust Him because of who he is and what He did for us. Just like the old song, our job and our blessing is to trust and obey.
