David and I just got back from our commissioning with the North American Mission Board (NAMB) in Los Angeles. It was a great time and we met some really great people while we were there. I want to tell you a brief story about someone we met there named Wendy.
Wendy grew up in Taiwan, and her parents were not Christians, though there was a church near her house. She was lonely and sad as a child and she told me she remembers seeing children leaving the church, and they were happy. She went there by herself at 10 years old to see why these children were so happy. Wendy told me she kept going back to church, because if she kept coming they would give her a shoebox of toys at Christmas time. So she kept returning to get her box of toys, and in the process she understood the gospel and gave her heart to Christ.
Now Wendy is a missionary with NAMB, and she is living in Canada working with church plants and trying to network Chinese pastors together. And she still has the stuffed bear that was in her box that she got from the Christians at age 10, when she went to church by herself.
What an amazing God we have. He can use a small box of toys to reach a child who has never heart the gospel. And He can use that child to grow up and move across the world to reach more people who have never heard the gospel. You just never know how God will use your box of toys, or your Bible study class, or your prayers, to change the world.
