This year for David’s birthday I planned a surprise party. . . just because. Once I get the idea to do something challenging, especially involving a surprise, I find that I just have to follow through on it. To give up on the idea is to wave the white flag. So even though this birthday was challenging for many reasons, I determined to pull it off! There were so many little and big details regarding food, making the cake, cleaning the house, storing things for the party where he wouldn’t see them . . .
Perhaps the most nerve wracking part of it for me, where it could have all fallen apart, was trying to get him out of the house on the night of the party without acting weird or suspicious. It was on a Sunday, and we came home from our 8 hour day at church completely beat like usual. We ate at home and watched a few Office episodes on the couch. Neither of us changed clothes (not sure why he didn’t, but i wasn’t going to suggest it!) I had told all of our friends to come in the house at 5:30 and I would leave a key under the door. My signal we were gone was to light up the christmas lights on the balcony. So I somehow meandered David out of the house at 5:22 to take me to Jamba Juice because I really wanted a smoothie!
Here is how the last 30 minutes went, when I knew our time was getting short. . . Me:”lets go to jamba juice now, will you take me to get a smoothie?” David: “Sure.” Kendall: “Before we go will you help me straighten the house?” David: “sure” (no questions, but he was moving really slow!) Then we finally get ready and as we walked out the door I said “Hey, while you’re over there will you turn on the Christmas lights so they’ll be on when it gets dark?” David: “ok.” Just like that!!
So off we went to Jamba Juice with 8 minutes to spare, and then we stopped by Safeway because I needed potatoes (which I did!). We ran into Chris Krueger there (totally unplanned . . . he couldn’t come to the party because his wife was on bedrest with twins) and talked with him for about 10 minutes (perfect!) and then headed home.
David had no idea! I’ve done one surprise for him before, but that time we were out to dinner with friends. I’ve never done one like this where people came in our house and decorated and put food out in under 35 minutes! Thanks to all our friends, and Happy Birthday sweetie!
