Yesterday my friends threw me my very first baby shower because I am about to have my very first baby. It was a wonderful day for me for so many reasons and I’d like to share those reasons with you as I reflect on them myself.
I have the best friends in the world, because they invested so much of themselves to make the day special. As you may have seen from a previous blog of mine, my theme/fabric for the baby’s room (and by room I mean corner) is black and white with red, yellow, and pink birds. When I walked into the shower I saw the decorations and they had coordinated everything with that theme! There was a tree with birds on it . . . cupcakes with birds on them . . . everyone had their own mason jar with black and white ribbon and their name flagged on a black and white spiral straw. They had set up stations too, where girls could write tips and blessings and paste them in a beautiful journal for me, they could write on diapers with sharpies so I can have a laugh when I’m changing the stinkies.
I walked into the house and was so touched and blown away by how beautiful everything was!
And there was a great turn out . . . many friends who made time in their busy schedules and brought beautiful gifts. One of the cool things is that it was a book shower, so lots of ladies brought their favorite baby or children’s book as part of their gift. Now I have a stash of awesome books! Many of them classics that I read and loved when I was little.
And to top it all off my mom schemed with my husband and friends to fly in and surprise me and come to the shower! I had absolutely no idea and did not expect it at all. Its hard being so far away from family when you’re having a baby. Skype helps some, but there’s nothing like going out for yogurt with friends and seeing your mom (whom you think is thousands of miles away) appear outside the window waving at you! Thank you daddy for making that happen! Booty I missed you too!
I think through all of it I have just felt so incredibly blessed by God. He is showing me how he provides for my needs and the needs of my family. I really felt him calling my attention to the fact that the shower was not near as much about material things as it was about Him caring for me through his body. This is what the church is supposed to be! We celebrate and take care of one another, and I got to be on the receiving end in a wonderful way. I am full of gratitude!
