We don’t think much about the importance of hope until we find ourselves in a hard time. Then we realize very quickly how important hope really is.
The word hope is watered down in our language to mean a desire, or a want. But I’m talking about real hope. The kind that Jesus brings to us because of His resurrection from the dead. I want to be as clear as I possibly can about the message of the Easter holiday. Why do we celebrate Easter? Because Jesus is our only hope to be back in right relationship with our loving creator. Jesus is God. He came in human flesh, born as a man in order to die and take on Himself the punishment for our sin and wrongdoing.
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:5-6)
We each deserve the death He died because we are sinful in our hearts, and our sin is incompatible with God’s perfect nature. So Jesus took the punishment for our sin on Himself to save us! They put His broken and bleeding body in a tomb and after three days He was raised back to life. Do I really believe this? Yes, I do! With all my heart I do. That’s why Easter matters.
If we belong to Jesus we can know our eternity is secure, no matter what happens to us here in this life. That’s real hope. It’s bigger than loss, pain, uncertainty, suffering, loneliness, and even the power of death. It’s bigger than anything we face.
So how does it truly become a reality in your life? Well it’s not complicated. You just have to acknowledge the fact that your heart is sinful just like everyone else’s and you can’t save yourself. Talk to Jesus and tell Him you understand you need His grace and forgiveness. Surrender your life to Him. Jesus was raised to life on the third day so that you could have peace with God, and the hope of eternal life. Plain and simple.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Peter 1:3 NIV84)
So no matter what you are facing this spring, its possible to have real enduring hope and security in Christ. Thats what Easter is all about. An empty tomb and a living Savior. I honestly don’t know how I would survive life’s hardest hits if I didn’t have this hope!
